It is approximately 30 kilometres from Corfu Town on the north-east coast of the island. A long, white shingle and pebble beach surrounds a curving bay with clear blue water. It is surrounded by green, olive-clad hills and its peaceful atmosphere is perfect for relaxing holidays. During the day you can enjoy a variety of waters sports or sign up for lessons at the sailing school. There are a couple of waterside tavernas serving traditional Greek cuisine. Neighbouring Kassiopi is a lively summer holiday resort with a small harbour and it offers a wide choice of tavernas and bars for dining and entertainment. Ancient Kassiopi was founded in 281 BC by residents of the Epirot town of the same name, who were brought here by King Pyrros when he captured the island. The name (Kassion Oro) derives from the Temple of Kassios Zeus, which was built in the area in a prominent position. The temple no longer exists but is thought to have occupied the current site of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Kassiopitras. The oldest fortress on the island is found in Kassiopi. It was built by the Romans and is an indication of the strategic importance of the site. The fortress was demolished by the Venetians and the ruins which stand today belong to the castle which was later built in the same spot. Kassiopi's pretty harbour is surrounded by waterside bars and tavernas. The village itself has plenty of tourist shops, bars and restaurants, staffed by relaxed and friendly locals. Boats trips leave from Kassiopi harbour each day to Corfu Town and other beaches along the coast. As well as shops and restaurants, there are banks with cash machines, doctors and pharmacies, internet cafés and supermarkets, a school and a church (where sightseers are welcome, as long as they respect the traditions), travel agents and a police station. Motor boats are available for hire by the day or week and boat trips leave from Kassiopi harbour each day to Corfu Town and other beaches along the coast. Excursions also run daily from the harbour to all parts of the island, and via Corfu Town to Albania. The main coast road runs through the edge of the town, and a loop takes buses as far as the village square. In an attempt to alleviate the traffic congestion around the harbour, a Car and Coach Park is provided at the top of the town. A free 'Land Train' operates a daytime shuttle service between the car park and the Harbour, with various stops on the journey. One or two taxis are also based there.
